I recently heard media reports that plastic products contain a chemical that can encourage prostate cancer. Do SC Johnson’s plastic products contain BPA (bisphenol A)?

No. A recent study conducted and published by the University of Cincinnati found that the estrogen-like chemical, BPA (bisphenol A), has been shown to encourage the growth of a specific category of prostate cancer cells. BPA is commonly used in the manufacture of certain plastic products, such as food cans, milk container liners, food containers, and water supply pipes. As a result, media have been reporting on this study and the fact that this chemical is commonly found in plastic food storage containers.

SC Johnson does not use BPA in its plastic products, Ziploc® brand bags and containers, and Saran

™ brand wraps.

SC Johnson is a leader in providing high quality products. All of its products are extensively evaluated for toxicity and safety and comply with, and often even exceed, applicable quality and safety regulations.

The Saran

™ Original packaging has changed. Has the product changed?

Yes. Saran

™ Original Wrap is now Saran

™ Premium Wrap. Saran

™ Premium Wrap is now chlorine-free - which represents a change in our formula. This formulation change represents the company's commitment to use more environmentally-responsible ingredients in our products. In fact, you may be interested to know that through a program called Greenlist™, SC Johnson has a system that classifies all of the ingredients that go into SC Johnson products according to their impact on the environment. The company uses that information to make measurable improvements in the company's ecological footprint.

Based on consumer feedback, we learned that the "stretch" factor was important for maximum product performance. The new film in Saran

™ Premium is 30% thicker than before and now stretches to seal.

Why did SC Johnson remove the chlorine?

SC Johnson manufactures each of its products to strict environmental standards. This formulation change represents the company's commitment to use more environmentally-responsible ingredients in our products. We strive to make each of our products environmentally responsible throughout its life cycle - including formulation, packaging, application, and disposal.

From a science-based standpoint, the greatest opportunity for us to further improve our footprint on the environment is in the materials we utilize in our products.

For example, SC Johnson led the aerosol products industry in completely removing CFCs worldwide from all aerosol products in 1975; this eventually became Federal law.

SC Johnson continues to take early action concerning materials that can have environmental issues. SC Johnson's current efforts are a result of our initiative to look for more sustainable and environmentally acceptable plastics.

Do I need to replace my box of Saran

™ Original since the film contains chlorine?

No, you do not need to replace your box of Saran

™ Original. Saran

™ Original wrap meets the safety requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in accordance with temperatures associated with the reheating and defrosting of food in the microwave oven, as well as room, refrigerator, and freezer temperatures.

I have received e-mails on plasticizers in plastic wrap. Can you provide me with more information on plasticizers in your products?

Our Saran

™ and Ziploc® products do not contain harmful plasticizers, including those associated with endocrine disruption such as adipates (DEHA) or phthalates (DEHP).

I have received e-mails on dioxins in plastic wrap. Can you provide me with more information on dioxins in your products?

In 2002, SC Johnson became aware of an e-mail that was being widely circulated, which warned consumers about the alleged dangers of using plastics in the microwave. This e-mail claimed that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body, thereby increasing the risk of producing cancerous cells. SC Johnson has researched these claims and it is clear that the information is not only misleading, but also unnecessarily alarms consumers.

When used in the microwave, there is no trace level migration of dioxins from any Saran

™ or Ziploc® product. We know this because these products are 100% dioxin-free. You also should be aware that dioxins can only be formed when chlorine is combined with extremely high temperatures, such as the temperatures generated in waste incinerators. Those incinerators produce temperatures of more than 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit, an extreme temperature that even the most powerful consumer microwave ovens are unable to produce.

Our Saran

™ and Ziploc® products can be used with confidence when label directions are followed. All Saran

™ Wraps, Ziploc® Containers and microwaveable Ziploc® Bags meet the safety requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for temperatures associated with defrosting and reheating food in microwave ovens, as well as room, refrigerator, and freezer temperatures.

The Saran

™ Cling Plus® Wrap packaging has changed. Has the product changed?

Yes. The Cling Plus® formula has been improved. The film is 30% thicker than before, so it stretches for a tight cling, and is now more puncture and tear resistant to keep foods fresh.

Where can I find festive colored Saran

™ wrap?

Due to consumer feedback, our plastic wraps are available year round in the colorless version. Festive colors will be available periodically throughout the year in special seasonal packs for Saran

™ Premium Wrap. Look for festive wrap during the holiday season!

I love Saran

™ Plastic Wrap, but there are two different Saran

™ wraps available. What is the difference between the two?

Saran

™ Premium Wrap is a premium wrap that is easy to handle. Saran

™ Cling Plus® wrap provides excellent cling and value pricing

What sizes do Saran

™ Plastic Wraps come in?

Saran

™ Premium Wrap comes in a 100 sq. ft. size and our Saran

™ Cling Plus® wrap comes in a 200 sq. ft. size.

What ingredients are in Saran

™ Plastic Wraps?

Saran

™ Premium Wrap and our Saran

™ Cling Plus® Wrap are made with Polyethylene.

What is the best way to get Saran

™ Plastic Wraps to cling to a bowl, plate, etc.?

For both Saran

™ Premium Wrap and Saran

™ Cling Plus® Wrap, we recommend stretching the wrap over the bowl, plate, etc. to create a tight seal.

Can Saran

™ Plastic Wraps be used in the microwave?

Yes, Saran

™ Wraps can be used in the microwave. For best results, you should allow a one-inch space between the food and the plastic wrap. It is important that you vent excess steam by turning back one corner of the wrap. To prevent the wrap from melting, food high in fat (like bacon) or sugar (like pastry) should not come into contact with the plastic wrap.

Can Saran

™ Plastic Wraps be used in the oven?

No, Saran

™ Wraps are not for use in conventional ovens, browning units, toaster ovens, or on stovetops.

Can Saran

™ Plastic Wraps be used to freeze food?

Yes, Saran

™ Wraps can be used to freeze foods. Allow enough film to fold or overlap the ends, and make sure to wrap the item tightly, squeezing out any excess air before the ends are folded over and under the contents. Removing excess air reduces the development of freezer burn. We recommend freezing food for only up to two weeks when wrapped in plastic. For longer freezer storage, we suggest you use our Ziploc® Double Guard® freezer bags or our Ziploc® freezer bags.

What can I do to prevent losing the end of my Saran

™ Plastic Wrap and keep it from tearing when I unroll it?

When using the wrap, make sure that the wrap end is pressed against the adhesive panel, which holds the wrap in place, ready for the next use. If the wrap end does get lost use a piece of tape to find the end by placing the sticky side of the tape on the plastic wrap and pulling forward. Once the roll is restarted, be sure some of the wrap remains outside the box until the next use.

My Saran

™ Wrap keeps popping out of the box when I use it. How can I prevent this?

For best results, the plastic wrap should be oriented in the box so that the wrap is coming up from under the roll against the side of the box with the cutter.
